The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, called for the "urgent" deployment in Haiti of a multinational force made up of "police" and "military" to fight against the armed gangs that ravage the Caribbean country, in a letter addressed to the Council of Security released this Wednesday.

Guterres, insisted on his call "to member states to deploy a non-United Nations multinational force, made up of special police forces and supporting military units," in a 12-page letter dated Monday, to which he had AFP access.

In his letter, Guterres advocates that this force act bilaterally in cooperation with the Government of Haiti and have the endorsement of the Security Council.

"Addressing the security situation in Haiti requires a series of coercive law enforcement measures, including the active use of force in targeted police operations against heavily armed gangs," the secretary general wrote.
